R. Michael Knapp  Chairman Emeritus 

R. Michael Knapp serves as Chairman Emeritus of Iowa Realty Co., Inc.  His title reflects a successful 40 plus year career in real estate services and development.  He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1972 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Marketing. 

Upon graduation, he entered the real estate profession as a sales associate with Iowa Realty and five years later he was promoted to manager of the company’s largest sales office.  In 1984, he became general sales manager of the residential division of Iowa Realty; and in 1991, promoted to Senior Vice President. Mike became President and CEO in 1992. Mike also devotes a significant amount of time to community, civic and professional causes and organizations. He is a former President of the Variety Club of Iowa, as well as Past President of the Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS.  Mike has been involved in all aspects of the REALTOR legislative process over the years, and his dedication to the profession through political and legislative involvement is unparalleled. 

One of Mike’s strong attributes is being able to look to the future and being proactive in developing programs and strategies that benefit clients, sales associates and the company.  His commitment to the core values of professionalism, integrity and excellence has enabled Iowa Realty to continue to be a leader in the real estate industry.  Mike lives in Des Moines with his wife, Ellyn, and has two daughters, Ashley and Katelyn.

Kim Bakey  CEO, HomeServices of Iowa

Chief Executive Officer Kim Bakey oversees leadership and strategic planning for all of the HomeServices of Iowa companies, including brokerage, title, escrow/settlement, insurance and mortgage. With over 20 years of real estate experience, Kim has served in financial and senior management positions within HomeServices of Iowa and Iowa Realty since 1994.

An 1984 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in accounting, Kim began her career in public accounting with Coopers & Lybrand (n/k/a PricewaterhouseCoopers) followed by a six year period with Central Life Assurance Company (n/k/a Athene Annuity and Life Company). Kim has been a licensed CPA in Iowa since 1984. Additionally, Kim holds an Iowa real estate broker license.

Kim plays an active role in the Des Moines area communities and currently serves on the board of directors for Blank Children’s Hospital and the West Des Moines Student Scholarship Fund. Kim is active in various financial and real estate professional organizations. In 2010, Kim received the 2010 CFO of the Year Award as presented by the Business Record and Prairie Meadows; and in 2016, Kim was recognized by the Swanepoel Power 200 (SP200) Most Powerful People in Real Estate.  

An Iowa native, Kim resides in West Des Moines with her husband, Tom. Together they have three daughters. 

Brennan Buckley  President, Iowa Realty

As President of Iowa Realty, Brennan Buckley is charged with overseeing one of the state’s strongest brands, which has been a leader since 1952. Working along side Iowa’s most accomplished agents, managers and employees, Brennan and his team take great pride in helping bring buyers and sellers together during what is likely the largest financial and emotional investment they’ll ever make – the purchase of a home. 

Prior to joining Iowa Realty, Brennan spent a dozen years at several Des Moines advertising agencies, working the majority of that time at The Integer Group. While at Integer, Brennan worked on some of the country’s best known brands, including McDonald’s Restaurants, Maytag Appliances and Pella Windows and Doors, an account he ultimately led, growing it to become the largest in the company.

Brennan graduated from the ISU Journalism School in 1995 with an advertising major, and he has served on a number of charity and professional boards. He is a former Des Moines Advertising Professional of the Year, and was also named to The Des Moines Business Record’s 2006 Class of “40 Under Forty” business leaders. He is married to Sarah Buckley, and together they live in Norwalk with their two wonderful children.

Ann Shelton  Chief Financial Officer of HomeServices of Iowa

Ann Shelton is the Chief Financial Officer of HomeServices of Iowa and is responsible for leading the financial, human resource and business support operations of Iowa Realty, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty, Iowa Title and Midland Title & Escrow, Iowa Realty Insurance Agency and First Realty Cares and Iowa Realty foundation. She joined the company in 2016 and has a background in public accounting and academia, as well as the corporate sector. Prior to joining HomeServices of Iowa, Ann held leadership roles with Pella Corporation, Wells Fargo, The Principal Financial Group and Mid-America Group. She is a CPA and received her Bachelor of Arts from Iowa State University and her Masters of Accounting from St. Ambrose University.

Lindsay Black   Director of Marketing

Lindsay Black started her career at Iowa Realty in 2008; Black was fresh out of college when Iowa Realty hired her as a marketing coordinator. She was eventually promoted to website administrator, a job that included overseeing all aspects of iowarealty.com.

She left Iowa Realty in 2012, working in two different industries before making her way back to real estate. Now, Lindsay oversees a team of six individuals and is responsible for all marketing-related aspects of the business.

Lindsay graduated from Iowa State University in 2008 with a journalism degree, with an emphasis in public relations. She interned with Freestyle Public Relations and from there was hired at Iowa Realty, where she worked until 2012.

Lindsay also worked at Maytag Dairy Farms in Newton, Ia. She oversaw their food and wine events, website, national advertising, and social media. Black left her position at Maytag to work at the National Pork Board as their producer and state communications manager. She managed pork.org and #realpigfarming, which is the group's social media effort for which they have won national awards. 

Lindsay is on the board of directors of Winefest Des Moines and has been involved with the event for five years. She is married to her husband, Colby Black, and they welcomed their daughter Elle Black into the world in February 2016. 

Cary Claiborne  Franchise Director

Cary Claiborne is Iowa Realty’s Franchise Director and provides leadership for Iowa Realty’s franchise broker network. He brings combined commercial and residential experience and over 30 years in the franchised restaurant business as a multi-unit franchisee as well as 15 years operating a sub-franchise company for Iowa and Nebraska. Providing a personal level of support for the Iowa Realty Franchise Network is key to helping the broker-owners achieve success and meet their goals.   

Enhancing the day to day operations of Iowa Realty Broker owners within their local communities is one of Cary’s key roles. Together with the strength and hard work of the current broker-owners, he seeks to find new individuals that could benefit from being affiliated with Iowa’s largest Real Estate Brokerage network. 

Cary has also served as a successful real estate agent in Central Iowa. 

Lori Hodges   Director of Human Resources

Lori Hodges joined HomeServices of Iowa in 2016 as Director of Human Resources. She provides human resources leadership and support to Iowa Realty, Iowa Title, Midland Title & Escrow and Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices First Realty.

Prior to joining HomeServices of Iowa, she was Director of Human Resources at The Homestead Autism Services, The Integer Group and Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Lori is an Iowa native and lives in Des Moines.

 

Michelle Kelley  Director of Education and Training

Michelle Kelley Joined HomeServices of Iowa in 2013 and is the Director of Education and Training. Michelle has been instrumental in building training capabilities to what they are today, with over 40 certified trainers who collectively provide more than 15,000 free CE credits each year. Iowa Realty University also has a pre-licensing program designed to get new real estate agents off to a successful start. 

Michelle previously worked in real esatate in eastern Iowa and owned her own business for over 18 years. Her experience as a successful agent, business owner, sales coach, office administrator and trainer helps to bring quality, focused education to agents to meet their goals. 

She is an Iowa native and currently lives in Ankeny with her husband of 32 years.

Darin Nelson  Senior Vice President of Technology

Darin Nelson is the Senior Vice President of Technology and joined the company in 2015. He provides the organization with technology depth and leadership. Darin has over a decade of experience as a technology consultant, manager and product architect in the financial services industry while working for First American and CoreLogic. Darin has an undergraduate degree from Drake University. He also  has a Master of Business Administration degree and a Master of Information Systems degree from the University of Iowa. 

 

Sandra Quesada  Corporate Counsel

Sandra Quesada is an attorney with the legal department of HomeServices of Iowa. She provides legal support and guidance to our agents, managers, and our various business units and subsidiaries including brokerage, title and escrow. Sandra routinely lectures on different real estate compliance and legal issues and works closely with management and agents on complex transactions and litigation matters.

Sandra has a background in real estate having been both a real estate agent and mortgage loan officer before attending law school. Prior to joining the company in 2015, she worked as counsel for a national title insurance company overseeing resolution of residential and commercial title insurance claims.

Sandra earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Florida International University and her Juris Doctorate from University of Iowa College of Law. She is licensed to practice law in both the state of Iowa and Florida and is fluent in Spanish. Outside of the office, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her fiancé Michael and their energetic boxer Zoey.
