If you haven’t been to Grimes in a while, you might be surprised! Grimes has grown from a sleepy little town to a small modern city with over 15,000 inhabitants in just a few short decades! Located on the far northwest side of the Des Moines metro area, Grimes is west of Johnston and north of Urbandale and lies partly in Dallas County and partly in Polk County. Grimes has a sparse suburban feel with beautiful neighborhoods suited to residents in all stages of life, and excellent schools. Many parks foster an active lifestyle, including Sleepy Hollow Park where several winter sports facilities make for a popular destination for the whole family.
Bikers and walkers in the Grimes area have several good options for getting out and enjoying nature, including the Beaverbrooke Park, Lions, and James Street Trails. The Des Moines Area Regional Transport (DART) system serves Grimes, and HIRTA transport is also available. The average one-way commute for Grimes residents is 23.9 minutes, a bit less than the national average of 26.4.
Grimes residents have a lot of great options for activities, for housing, and for jobs! Sporting fans can enjoy the GrimesPlex, the largest multi-sports turf complex in the Midwest. Bring the family to Fall Festival each October for an event packed with fun for all ages. In 2023, Grimes was designated an Iowa Great Place due to the city’s efforts in planning and economic development, which have enhanced the quality of life for all residents.
Named after James W Grimes, the 3rd Governor of Iowa, Grimes was incorporated as a city in 1894. A canning factory opened in 1902 producing canned vegetables, meats, dog food and more. By 1904, the town was thriving and boasted a hotel, a bank, a drugstore, several shops including two general merchandise stores, and a Presbyterian church. Grimes remained a small community until the 1970s, when it saw substantial growth bringing all the amenities that a community needs to be a suitable place to call home.
